pommilla niskaan

Kasassa kaikki huutaa, ulvoo, itkee, kiljuu samaan aikaan.

Onnistuttiin. (peukku).

Toisaalta myös opetukselta – hard work pays off.

Kausi on loppu.

How does it feel?

Question that everyone keeps asking me and I cannot find words to describe it so I use the same, often used ones like ”unbelievable” or ”so awesome, I am so happy”. But these words don’t satisfy me because there is a lot more going on and now when the emotions are still strong and storming through my mind and body, I decided to give a try and write about the experience and feelings.

Also this gives me something more permanent in addition to the images in my head as I forgot to act like we should in this era and didn’t take any pics that night (and post them to social media even though it is THE thing nowadays). I focused on the feelings and experience instead so no regrets 😉 OK but let’s go through everything in a chronological order if that would help me staying in the path (probably won’t).

(I have to say that it is hard to write this because it’s about feelings and trying to describe how I feel inside which is difficult already in Finnish but I’ll do my best also in English…)

Before the game I felt calm and strong. I knew I would give my everything to the game that I still had left in my body after four tight games in 8 days and that will be enough. The game started and I had a good feeling, relaxed but focused. Enjoying every moment of the great final which will be the last one for sure. (The wins were now 2-2 and this was the deciding fifth final match on Viesti’s home court).

The game itself was a little roller coaster too and of course it went to the fifth set again. I should have seen that coming. The start for the fifth set wasn’t exactly too strong from us and we were all the time little bit behind but never lost faith so we kept on fighting, got even and finally took the lead.

When the very last ball hit Viesti’s side of the court (HUGE block by our middle), begins something that could be said like a more vague set of memories. I am jumping like rabbit gone crazy around the court trying to set new vertical record before I notice everyone in the dawg pile where I will naturally intrude myself into. Although it looks in the picture that I jump ON my teammates like a bomb hahah.

In the pile everyone is just shouting, screaming, crying, laughing at the same time. It is something unbelievable. All that feeling that we have somewhere so deep in our chests and hearts, comes out like a tumult of yelling mixed with cry and laughter. I cannot describe that feeling really but I think that much of that drive and motivation that pushes us forward in practices derives from the desire to experience that emotion.

That is the feeling we aim for  and dream about when we spend those countless hours in the gym almost  everyday through the season. And it is so worth it because you cannot get that feeling from anywhere else. Or at least I haven’t found anything that could correspond that what just happened. I don’t believe either that people could experience that feeling if the team is not united, enjoy playing together, really have done huge amount of work for the victory and are conscious of how much it means for everyone.

That joy, bliss and happiness that was celebrated in the middle of our pile, was built together throughout the season. Commitment could be one good word to describe our journey to the win. Every player in addition to the staff did her/his best as an individual in order to achieve something great as a team. And we did. Thumbs up.

The commentator of YLE (TV-channel that mediated our matches) said that LP Viesti’s team has more variety and strength, has ”better arsenal” than we. Also Kangasala’s coach criticized our game to be too simple during the semifinals but hey, whose team is perfect? No one’s.

Our strength this year was i.e. persevere attitude, strong team spirit, hunger to win and will to be better and stronger than yesterday. These things should not be underestimated. They can even be the decisive matters in these games.

After the game we got our golden medals (<3), and the opponent team came to congratulate us. Now the emotions went to the opposite direction when I saw the disappointed and sad faces of Viesti’s players because I genuinely do remember how does it feel to be silver medalist after a final and it sucks. Deeply.

When I had to see my dear friend Jenni Hiltunen on the opposite side of the medal ceremony (used to be Petäjäjärvi), we both broke down to tears. We played together for four years and hunted for the golden ending of the season so hard but never got it. I don’t have words here either to describe that moment but that girl deserves gold and it breaks my heart that she hasn’t got one yet because she has done remarkable career in volleyball and is pure gold as a person as well.

Then back to celebrating and raising the trophy! Jumping around with screaming continues paused by congratulations and hugging. Same stuff continues in the locker room and I am so grateful and happy to have these amazing teammates that I can share these feelings with. Without people the victory would feel like nothing. This is the tip of the day right here :P.

Next I checked my phone when the biggest celebrations started to calm down and it was shower time. Oh my goodness how many people had texted me. I read a couple of those messages and burst into tears… Just so unbelievably beautiful words and crazy amount of congratulations. Yes, after all of those bumps that I have definitely had enough in my path, this season and the championship feels like a big reward. On the other hand it also feels little bit like a lesson – hard work seems to pay off.

And like I said, without the people around me, it wouldn’t feel good at all. The support and words coming from my family, friends and other people made my day perfect. Hugs and kisses to everyone – you mean the world to me!! <3

After we got into the bus, I slipped into a coma on the back seat. I lay there and breathed. Feels surreal. The season is now over. At that moment and later in the night I was thinking that why alcohol is needed in the celebrations if this euphoric feeling comes from the win… I mean like why would I want to get drunk if and when the feeling is just so great in itself that I don’t need anything else to feel happier? Yea I know Finnish culture is pretty much same as getting drunk in all occasions possible (:P) but in someway in that moment, celebrating with alcohol felt pointless.

I was already feeling ecstatic and wanted to prevail and enjoy that feeling when it still was so pure, if that makes any sense. OK but I will try move on so that I don’t kill you in boredom, this just crossed my mind and wanted to share this thought as well.

In the morning I woke up after sleeping less than four hours. And so did my teammate who was sleeping at my place. We still felt so hyped up that it was impossible to sleep. Although my body was already back in this world. Oh geeeeeezzzz how badly my body was aching when I went to pee in the middle of night, even my toes and fingers were cramping. I felt like I had played five final matches in 9 days. Hahaha and we freakin’ just did.

But yea. That kind of roller coaster of emotions it has been. Laughter, joy, cry, tears of joy, gratefulness, screaming, happiness, and sports at its very best. That is how I feel right now.
